What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a chronic pain and fatigue condition that affects 1 out of 25 people. Women are mainly affected but also men too. The most common age group is 30 to 50 years old but it can still affect younger and older people as well.
- ‘Brain Fog’
- Chronic Fatigue
Anyone with this condition will tell you that it can be quite life changing. Some people are more on the chronic scale than others and this can be very difficult managing day to day activities. FMS patients can take a while to get diagnosed which can also be very frustrating and due to this condition being under the Rheumatoid Arthritis umbrella, sometimes it can also get misdiagnosed.
What is the difference between Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue?
Most patients that experience Fibromyalgia generally also suffer with chronic fatigue. However as mentioned earlier they experience pain, which can be in fixed areas and also may move around the body. This is something that only FMS sufferers will have and therefore is what separates the two conditions.
Experience in treating patients with these conditions
3 years ago, I wrote a dissertation on whether acupuncture could help fibromyalgia symptoms. I wanted to explore this subject because I knew family members as well as patients that were experiencing this condition. The question my paper was based on; “Can Acupuncture Help Fibromyalgia Pain”. The answer is yes it can help. It depends on the patient’s individual condition and also with some patients once successful “top ups” are needed to maintain.
Over the past 3 years I have been using both fascial manipulation and acupuncture to help this condition. I have to be very clear; this is no cure for FMS but these techniques are good for helping and by alleviating the symptoms and working through the root cause, this allows them to gain control back into their lives.
Now the treatments have changed slightly with adding in Iridology into the mix!
From my experience with any condition that a patient presents with, everyone is different therefore its hard to put a timescale on “how long” you would potentially need to see some improvement.
The 12week treatment program is a commitment and a kick start that allows change within the body both via acupuncture, fascial manipulation and any post care advice from iridology. How big this change is, depends on where you are both physically as well as mentally.
The idea of change can be for some people quite overwhelming and within this condition the patient has to want to change and willing to, if needed, create new habits. This is not for everyone but what I do know from experience is that anyone with this condition goes through what we call the grieve cycle. Denial, anger, Bargaining, depression and finally Acceptance. You could be at any of these stages for a long period of time and without even realising you may go back and forth many times until you reach acceptance. These treatments are used to help you get to the acceptance stage.
As mentioned previously: acupuncture, fascial manipulation and iridology are all techniques that are used. Each one of these plays a huge part in recovery. There is also lots of post care advice given to the patient to follow.
12 weeks of treatment and some patients twice a week, can be quite costly. Therefore, I have created a discounted fee which lasts for the12 weeks and if the patient wishes to continue “monthly top ups” or need more, they will be at the normal price. I work with 5 patients on this plan at a time and then once they have finished their 12 weeks another patient may start.
If you would like to know more information or book an appointment please get in touch via the contact page. There are also two patient testimonials on the next page which will also give you an insight to how they got on with the program.
My name is Nadine and I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2014. Sara was recommended to me by a friend in November 2017 at the time I was struggling with Pain all over my body, my hands and feet were regularly swollen, sleeping was a real battle as I never woke up feeling refreshed and sometimes was living on 3hrs or less sleep per night. As a mother of 3 boys this wasn’t good at all. When I started my treatment with Sara, I was so desperate to feel even 10% better as through my fibromyalgia I had begun having anxiety attacks, became really depressed and life was looking like a never ending disaster.
From my first treatment I felt different I could feel an energy shift and as the weeks progressed my life changed:
1. I was sleeping better.
2. I was managing my anxiety.
3. My energy increased by 75%
4. I changed my eating habits (still a work in progress)
5. No swollen hands or feet
6. Better circulation within my body.
7. Feeling more optimistic about myself and life.
8. Became more educated about fibromyalgia.
9. Better quality of life with my family.
10. Acceptance of my fibromyalgia.
The journey is not easy, but Sara is so supportive and inspiring I have followed every bit of guidance and advice she has given me because I trust her and Acupuncture works alongside the additional information Sara provides.
Even if you are scared of needles which I was… I would recommend Sara and Acupuncture to people living with Fibromyalgia because it can help create harmony in your life.
I’ve had fibromyalgia for 20 years, initially brought on by a fall at school aged 13.
Over the years, the symptoms have worsened. The pain has become widespread and increasingly debilitating and there have been many other symptoms that have come on such as frequent faints, nausea and vomiting, migraines, increasing brain fog (memory loss, poor concentration etc.) balance and coordination issues, digestion problems etc.
Over the past three years, I’ve been largely housebound and in the last year, bedbound for long spells of time.
I’m always on a mission to find something that might ease things a bit and have tried numerous treatments over the years with limited success, the best being occasional short-term relief for a few hours or so.
I came across Fitness Therapy 4 You on a Redbridge website and thought I’d give fascial manipulation therapy a go. It’s been the single most transformational process I’ve ever been through.
Firstly, Sara sat down with me in the first session and went right back through the symptoms, including illnesses that predated fibromyalgia as far back as early childhood. This in itself was a huge relief. It was the first time ever that anyone had gone to that much trouble and was incredibly insightful at looking at underlying issues and patterns.
The next thing I noticed was Sara’s incredible ability to make connections between the issues discussed and symptoms that are presenting. It’s the first time I’ve really felt listened to and completely understood and that in itself was something special, but that was just the beginning.
After only 5 sessions I am noticing huge improvements. For the first time in 20 years, I can feel I’m beginning to heal and I’ve been given the gift of feeling like I’m back in my own body again.
A big problem for me at the start of the sessions was I had recently developed tics and shocks in various parts of my body when the pressure would build up. Within 2 sessions, they had gone from frequent (constant some days) and severe to occasional and significantly milder. To me, it feels like an absolute miracle.
I look forward to the sessions each week, and each week can feel my body come back to life more and more. It’s made me far more hopeful about my condition and the future.
Sometimes, chronic conditions can feel too complex to address with one treatment but fascial manipulation therapy has totally changed that as it works holistically with all the systems in your body. It’s really fascinating and incredible work. The sessions have already eradicated some symptoms altogether and are improving others significantly.
Sara’s huge amount of knowledge in this area and wider therapies is matched by her warmth, humour, positivity and genuine interest in each individual’s progress. I’m so grateful to have found her and I urge you to do the same.
I’ve also been surprised to hear the breadth of conditions that fascial manipulation is successful in treating. I’d encourage anyone with underlying or ongoing health issues to give this a go. It’s incredibly powerful and really works with your body to kickstart its own healing potential. I’m over the moon to have found this and would recommend it highly. It’s been an absolute game changer!
